Know Your Rights: Social Security & The LGBT Community
March 19, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm UTC-8Free
The LGBTQ Center of Long Beach, National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare Foundation, Archstone Foundation, & Councilmember Dr. Suja Lowenthal invite you to attend a free seminar on Social Security benefits and the LGBT community.
In light of the historic Windsor decision handed down by the Supreme Court on June 26, 2013, hundreds of federal benefits will now be available to same-sex married couples. For example, Social Security benefits formerly reserved for heterosexual married couples and their children will now be available to same-sex married couples. This is a significant development which will have a very positive financial impact on the elder LGBT community. There is an urgent need for public education for stakeholders so that they can understand the benefits that are now available to them and apply for them without delay. These benefits will have a positive financial impact on same-sex spouses, widows and children of LGBT parents. Join us in an engaging educational discussion which has the potential to improve the lives of many in our community by providing information that may lead to much needed resources.
An expert panel will be on hand to provide information and answer questions. The panel for the evening includes
Moderator: Stephanie Loftin, Long Beach Law
Panelists: Grace Kim, Social Security Administration
Web Phillips, National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare
Max Richtman, National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare
Reba Birmingham, Long Beach Law
A reception with refreshments begins at 6pm with the panel starting at 6:30. For more information or to RSVP contact Porter Gilberg at 562.434.4455 ext. 245 or at [email protected].
