World AIDS Day Candlelight Walk
December 1, 2016 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am UTC-8
World AIDS Day is held on the 1st of December each year and is an opportunity for people globally and locally to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day, held for the first time in 1988.
The LGBTQ Center of Long Beach, its community and neighbors have gathered each year to remember those we have have served, those we have lost and hold space to support our community living with HIV. After sunset, we walk in candlelight to the bluffs off Ocean Blvd. to light up a small memorial to commemorate another year passed and another year fought.
World AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public and city that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight stigma and improve education at home and in our schools. December 1st is an opportunity to show your support to and solidarity with the millions of people living with HIV. Wearing a red ribbon is one simple way to do this.
