Long Beach, CA – July 9, 2024 – The LGBTQ Center Long Beach is thrilled to announce Ellie Perez as its new permanent Executive Director, concluding a meticulous six-month search led by the Board of Directors. Ellie, who has been serving in the Interim role for the past 11 months, is renowned for her impactful advocacy and leadership within the LGBTQ community. She brings a wealth of experience and a heartfelt dedication to this vital role and has already seen several marque wins in her current capacity.
Ellie Perez, a native of Southern California and the daughter of Mexican immigrants, has been a lifelong champion for queer and marginalized voices. Her advocacy was sparked by the rejection and discrimination she experienced growing up in an evangelical church, leading her to take on roles in campaigns such as the Courage Campaign’s fight against Proposition 8 and serving as one of the first Board Members for the Latino Equality Alliance in East LA.
Her professional experience includes pivotal roles at the LA Unified School District, where she advocated for immigrant families and students with disabilities. As a mother of a transgender child, Ellie has also been a fervent advocate for transgender youth, working to ensure they receive adequate support in healthcare and social services.
Upon her appointment, Ellie Perez stated, “Leading the LGBTQ Center of Long Beach is a profound honor. My life experiences have instilled a deep commitment to service and advocacy. This Center is the first line of defense for many in our community seeking STI/HIV Testing, queer-focused legal services, mental health resources, and access to the community. I look forward to building upon our current offering of services and making our LGBTQ Center more inclusive for all members of our diverse community.”
Eduardo Lara, President of the Board of Directors, expressed his confidence in Ellie’s leadership: “Ellie’s appointment marks a significant moment for our Center. Her dedication and visionary leadership are exactly what we need to continue expanding our impact. We are excited about our future under her guidance.”
