The Basics of HIV & STI Testing

The Health Services team provides free on-site STI screenings for syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. This is done through blood and multi-site, self-collected samples from the genitals, throat, and rectum. Results are available in 3-5 business days and treatment is available at no cost if needed. STI-related exams, as well as screenings by a Nurse Practitioner, are available. We strive to make all of our services accessible to LGBTQ+ individuals who are uninsured or underinsured, or who do not feel comfortable discussing their sexual health with their own providers.

STI Basics and What You Should Know

Health Services

Syphilis

Syphilis is a common bacterial infection that’s spread through sex. Syphilis is easily cured with antibiotic medicine, but it can cause permanent damage if someone doesn't get treated. Like all bacterial infections, having syphilis once does not protect someone from getting it again, even if they received treatment. Using condoms correctly and consistently can reduce the chances of being exposed to syphilis.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a common bacterial infection that’s easily cured with antibiotic medicine. It’s sexually transmitted, and most people with gonorrhea don’t have symptoms. Consistent and correct condom use can help prevent gonorrhea, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that’s easily cured with antibiotic medicine. It’s one of the most common STIs, and most people who have chlamydia don’t show any symptoms. Using condoms and getting tested can help prevent infections from chlamydia and other STIs.

HIV

The vast majority of HIV infections can be detected earlier than before. Why is this important to know? Early detection can lead to better health outcomes and less complications. It also prevents further transmission, since a large portion of new HIV infections come from individuals who are newly infected and don't know their HIV status. An undetectable viral load can prevent the transmission of HIV through sex. Check out U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) for more information. Although the most effective way to prevent the sexual transmission of HIV is to avoid exposure to bodily fluids that contain the virus, the reality is that not all exposures result in infections and the likelihood of infection depends on many factors. You CANNOT get HIV from kissing, hugging, sharing food, toilet seats, or sweat.

Preventative Care Overview

PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is medicine people at risk for HIV take to prevent getting HIV from sex or injection drug use. PrEP can stop HIV from taking hold and spreading throughout the body.

PEP, or post-exposure prophylaxis, is a short course of HIV medicines taken very soon after a possible exposure to HIV to prevent the virus from taking hold in the body.

PEP must be taken within 72 hours (3 days) after a possible exposure to HIV, or it won’t work. Every hour counts!

How do you know if you need PEP?

PEP may be right for you if you are HIV-negative or don’t know your HIV status, and you think you may have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours:

  • During sex (for example, you had a condom break with a partner of unknown HIV status or a partner with HIV who is not virally suppressed)
  • Through shared needles, syringes, or other equipment used to inject drugs (for example, cookers)
  • Through sexual assault
  • Through a possible workplace exposure, such as from needlestick injury. Workplace HIV transmission is extremely rare.

The Center can help you get started on PrEP and PEP.

Call us if you’re interested in PrEP or need PEP at (562) 434-4455 ext. 500
