The Richard Morley Youth Fund honors a longtime Long Beach resident and Center supporter, Richard Morley, who passed away in 2020. Remarkably, he survived with HIV/AIDS for nearly forty years.
Richard’s life was outstanding in many other ways as well. After moving to Southern California from his native Indiana in the mid-1970s, he became the head of the English Department and public face of the then-new Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach. If he wasn’t exactly “out,” he wasn’t “in” either. In a time before being gay was accepted by the wider society, Richard lived his life exactly how he pleased.
Always challenging himself, he eventually left teaching to co-found Crane Morley, which became a successful corporate Training and Development company. Later, he became the president of various nonprofits benefitting college age youth. The throughline of Richard’s life was his interest in young people—mentoring and inspiring them. The Richard Morley Youth Fund is a fitting tribute to his memory. You can contribute to the Center’s numerous inviting youth programs by donating directly to The Richard Morley Youth Fund.
Together, we can create a future where everyone in our community feels seen, heard, and supported.
